Verle Dee McMurphey was born in Emporia, Kansas, on February 18,1954, the son of Margaret Jean (McMurphey) McHugh.

Surviving family members include half-brother; Gary Leon McHugh, Hartford, KS, nephews; Austin Cushman, and Joseph McHugh, niece, Maddison McHugh, great-nephew, Gunner McHugh, and long-time companion of 20 years, Jeanette Harbaugh of their home.

He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Gary Lee McHugh.
