Vera Rachel Shimp Hoobler Rhoads, 90, passed away Thursday, February 11, 2016 at Holiday Resort in Emporia. She was born February 2, 1926 in Garnett, Kansas the daughter of John and Edna Hicks Shimp. ��Vera attended Gridley High school and graduated with the Class of 1944. She continued her education at Emporia State teachers College where she earned her teaching certificate. She went on to teach at the Sunnyside and Number 8 schools. ��Vera was joined in marriage to Harry Hoobler on December 12, 1946. They shared over 46 years together until Harry's death on May 4, 1993. She worked with Harry on the family farm west of Madison and was employed at I.B.P. from 1968 until her retirement in the early 1980's. ��Vera was a member of the Madison United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, receiving the honor of Woman of the Year in 1999. Her many community activities included driving a school bus for U.S.D. 386, and serving as a Girl Scout Leader. She also cooked for Meals on Wheels in Madison for several years. Vera was a past President of the P.T.A. and American Legion Auxillary in Madison. Vera was also a Member of the Order of The Eastern Star. She will remain in the hearts of her two daughters, Connie Jo (Bob) Evans of Madison and Alpha Jean (Bruce) Stubbs; son, Mike (Barb) Hoobler of Madison; sisters, Jean Nally of Louisville, KY and Norma (E.L.) Williams of Emporia; Brother, John (Shirley) Shimp of Manhattan, Kansas; five grandchildren, Teresa Adams of Blackwell, OK, Kane (Jolene) Haas of Madison, Amanda Cooper of Madison, Brent (Jaimee) Hoobler of Wamego and Lisa (Brandon) Turner-Hernandez of Spring Hill; seven great-grandchildren, Rachel, Zachary, Quentin, Trey, Aubrey, Toree and Trista and five great-great-grandchildren, Mason, Kaston, Emma, Anabella and Isaac. Vera was preceded in death by three sisters, JoAnn Phillips, Frances Turner and Edna McClurkan. ��Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M., Monday, February 15, 2016 at the Madison United Methodist Church. Burial will services at Blakely Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services Monday at the church.
