Shirley Nadine Parks, beloved wife of Lawrence E. Parks, Miller, KS, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2019, at Stormont Vail Hospital, Topeka, KS, surrounded by her family.Shirley was born April 5, 1931, to Ed and Fern Johnson, Miller, KS. She graduated from Miller High School in 1949. She worked as a nurse aid before marrying her high school sweetheart, Lawrence, March 26, 1950. They were married in the house where she lived until her passing.She is survived by her husband, Lawrence, and four children: Carolyn Duncan (Ron), Shawnee, KS; Dianne Stapleton (Paul), Springfield, MO; David Parks (Sarah), Raytown, MO; Duane Parks (Chris), Miller, KS; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Berenice Tredway (Larry), Galva, KS; sister-in-law Pat Johnson, New Ulm, MN; brother-in-law Paul Parks, Reading, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews.Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Dr. Lawrence W. Johnson (Doris), Glenn Johnson (Lois), Norman Johnson, Gary Johnson; sisters Marilyn Miller (Byron), Ardis Williams (Bill), Christine Johnson; parents-in-law George and Ellen Parks; brothers-in-law Derald Parks (Lois), Ralph Parks (Nina); sister-in-law Carlene Parks.Shirley was a devoted home maker and mother. She enjoyed having family and friends visit. Her family considered her wonderful fried chicken, angel food and chocolate cakes, pies, and cinnamon rolls to be specialties. She enjoyed attending activities of her children and grandchildren rarely missing ballgames or other special events. She was a kind and giving person who always put the needs of others before her own.She was a member of the Miller United Methodist Church, Miller United Methodist Women, and the Methodist Friendship Class. She spent many hours planning and serving family funeral meals, and coordinating the annual bazaar and Lord’s Herd banquets.Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 9, 2019, 2:00 P.M. at the Miller United Methodist Church. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 8, 5:30-7:00 P.M. at the VanArsdale Funeral Chapel, Osage City, KS. Memorial contributions may be made to the Miller Fire Department and the Miller United Methodist Women.
