Shirley Atchison

June 27, 1937 — June 5, 2026

Topeka

Shirley Atchison, 88, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2026, at Lexington Park Assisted Living, surrounded by her loving family and her cousin, Linda.

Shirley was born on June 27, 1937, in Harveyville, Kansas, to Albert and Nellie (Taylor) Masters.

Growing up, Shirley loved roller skating and could often be found skating backwards or even dancing on skates. She cherished spending time with her father as they tended cattle together and often shared fond memories of riding in the truck with him, helping care for the cattle, and even poking them with a cattle prod when needed. She also worked at the family diner, where she learned the value of hard work and serving others.

On February 26, 1955, Shirley married the love of her life, Robert Atchison, Sr., in Burlingame, Kansas. Together they shared more than 70 years of love, laughter, and devotion. Their marriage was a beautiful example of partnership and commitment, and together they raised four children; Carolyn, Robert Jr., Steve, and Russell; who were the pride and joy of their lives.

Shirley was a devoted and loving mother who always put her family first. Once her children were grown, she worked as a school lunch lady and later served as a school Grandma, touching the lives of many children with her kindness and caring heart.

In her free time, Shirley enjoyed playing bingo and visiting casinos. She loved family vacations to Branson, camping trips, and making memories with those she loved most. One of her favorite pastimes was sitting on the porch with Robert, watching the activity at Casey's and enjoying each other's company.

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Carolyn (Chad) Bonczkowski of Topeka, Kansas; her sons, Steve Atchison of Grand Junction, Colorado, and Russell (Cathy) Atchison of Topeka, Kansas; her grandchildren, Bobby, Beth, Sara, David, Jessica, Kayla, Corey, Brandi, and Cody; and twenty-one great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Atchison, Sr.; her son, Robert Atchison, Jr.; her parents, Albert and Nellie Masters; and her brother, Billy Dean Masters.
