Roy Eugene Hoobler, 93, passed away Sunday, May 25, 2025, at Life Care Nursing Center in Burlington.
He was born on October 28, 1931, Northwest of Madison, the son of Roy Elmer and Ina Pearl (McMurray) Hoobler. He attended Madison High School and graduated with the Class of 1949.
Roy was joined in marriage to Elwilda B. How “Willie” on December 9, 1952, in Emporia. Their first home together was on a farm Southeast of Madison. They moved into town in 1960 and have lived at his current home since 1963.
As early as high school, Roy worked for Emch Feed, predominantly as a truck driver. He drove well into his 70’s before he retired. Roy was a diligent worker that instilled his work ethic in his children, Bernie and Deborah. He held a keen sense of community. Roy was a founding board member of the Greenwood County Water District #3. He held this position into his 70’s as well.
His life was not without loss. Roy was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Elwilda “Willie” on April 19, 2020. He was also preceded in death by a son, Bernie Hoobler; a granddaughter, Melissa Mays; three great-grandchildren, Henry Haag, Chase Luby and Paxton Luby; a sister, JoAnn Jamison and husband Woodrow; brothers, Robert Hoobler and wife Shirley, Martin Hoobler and wife Norma and Harry Hoobler and wife Vera.
Roy will live on in the hearts and memories of his daughter; Deborah Haag and her husband Tony of Olpe; grandchildren, Heather Dobbs and husband Tyler, Andrew Haag and wife Jean; great-grandchildren, Nolan Fuzzell, Emma Mandella, Theron Mays, Drew, Harley, Holden and Hudson Haag, Titan Dobbs; numerous extended family members and a community of friends.
A memorial service is scheduled for 10:30 A.M., Monday, June 2, 2025, at the VanArsdale Funeral Home in Madison. Reverend Bob Robison will preside over services Inurnment will follow services at Blakely Cemetery where he will rest next to his beloved Willie. Condolences may be expressed at vanarsdalefs.com.
