Richard Dean Echavez passed away on July 7, 2026, though to almost everyone who knew him, he was simply "Gus."
Gus had a remarkable gift for making people feel welcome. He never met a stranger. Whether you had known him for years or had just met him, he could strike up a conversation that left you smiling. His quick wit, infectious sense of humor, and genuine kindness made even ordinary moments unforgettable.
Above all else, Gus loved his family. They were the center of his world, and he took immense pride in the people he loved. He is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Katie Scott; his son-in-law, Josh Scott; his cherished grandson, Jaxon; his son, Richard Thomas Echavez; his stepchildren, Donnie (Anna, Brian, Harrison, Calvin and Elliot) and Breanna Bailey (Jake, Payton, Jeremiah, Olivia and Ronnie), his sister, Krystal Echavez; and his many nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in his heart. The love he gave his family will continue to live on through the memories they shared and the lives they continue to build.
Gus believed in the value of hard work and took great pride in everything he did. For many years, he worked as a contractor, using his hands and talents to build, repair, and improve the lives of those around him. Later in life, he returned to school to further his own education before becoming a plumbing instructor at a junior college. Teaching became more than a profession—it became an opportunity to mentor others, sharing not only the skills of his trade but also the confidence, work ethic, and life lessons that helped shape the next generation.
One of Gus's greatest joys was bringing people together around the table. He loved preparing Hawaiian dinners for family and friends, and those meals were about much more than the food—they were about laughter, conversation, and making everyone feel at home. His generosity, hospitality, and love could be felt in every meal he shared.
No tribute can fully capture a lifetime of love, laughter, and memories. Those who knew Gus each carry their own stories—moments of shared laughter, thoughtful advice, quiet generosity, delicious meals, and simple conversations that meant more than they may have realized at the time. Those memories are now part of the legacy he leaves behind. As we mourn his passing, we are also deeply grateful. Grateful for the time we shared with him, for the joy he brought into our lives, and for the example he set through his kindness, perseverance, generosity, and unwavering devotion to his family and friends.
Though Gus is no longer with us in person, his spirit lives on in the stories we tell, the lessons he taught, the meals we remember, and the love he gave so freely. He will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and always held close in our hearts.
A visitation for Gus will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at VanArsdale Funeral Chapel in Osage City.
