Michael James Whalen

Michael J. Whalen, 85, passed away, Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at Midland Hospice Care in Topeka.

Michael James Whalen was born May 19, 1941, in Osage City, the son of Donald William and Forest Sadie (Tuttle) Whalen. He graduated from Osage City High School in 1959.

He was joined in marriage to Kathleen Rae Bergquist on April 15, 1967, in Osage City. To this union, a son was born, Joseph Todd Whalen.

Mike worked many years as a warehouse manager for Hallmark.

He was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Osage City.

Michael will be forever remembered by his son, Joseph T. Whalen of Osage City; three sisters, Susan (Lawrence) Bunger of Osage City, Cynthia Whalen of Burlingame, Katherine (Neil) Johnson of Burlingame; three brothers, Richard (Jane) Whalen of Bonner Springs, Kansas, Greg (Sandy) Whalen of Osage City and Kurt (Susie) Whalen of Lawrence and many extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Nancy Bowlin and a brother, Ernest Whalen.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m.., Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Osage City. Family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m., Monday, September 21, 2026, with Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Inurnment will take place after mass at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice House and sent in care of VanArsdale Funeral Chapel, 107 N. Sixth, Osage City, Kansas 66523.
