Leland Fredric Spade, 73, passed away on October 11, 2025, in Osage City, Kansas, surrounded by his loving family.
Leland was born on December 4, 1951, in Emporia, Kansas, the son of Clifford and Olive (Hinck) Spade. A proud graduate of Northern Heights High School, Class of 1969, Leland excelled in multiple sports and left a legacy by setting records in track, football, and basketball. After high school, he attended Butler County Community College, where he earned an associate degree in automotive technology.
Leland was the devoted father of three children Travis, Scott, and Cheryl, whom he loved deeply.
Growing up on the family homestead, he built a strong work ethic and sense of responsibility that extended into his career. He dedicated 40 and half years of his professional life to the Kansas Turnpike Authority, where he worked diligently until his retirement. Leland found great joy in honest days’ work and well-earned rewards.
Leland’s character and drive showed through in everything he did. He was the first president of the Riverside 4-H Club and raised prized animals throughout his life. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and valued introducing the next generations to his love of the outdoors. In recent years, some of his greatest pleasures came from watching his grandchildren participate in sports and other activities.
A proud member of his community, Leland could often be found at local events, church breakfasts, and fundraising fish fries. Some evenings he could be found giving country dance lessons, which he especially loved.
Leland is survived by his sons, Travis (Kendra) and Scott (Chelsea); daughter, Cheryl; and grandchildren, Xada and Raylan. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Leroy Spade; and sister, Marilyn Haag.
