Joseph Eugene Quaney of Burlingame, KS died on August 8, 2025 at his home in Burlingame, KS surrounded by his family. He was 92.
Joe was born on March 3, 1933 in rural KS to Eugene J. and Anna (Heise) Quaney. He married Henrietta Heiman on February 11, 1961 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict, KS.
He graduated from Washburn Rural High School in 1951. Joe joined the National Guard for a 1 year term then the US Army from 1953-55. He lived in Topeka, KS until moving to his farm in Burlingame in 1957 where he farmed and lived until his passing. He took great pride in raising hogs, growing grains and teaching his children and grandchildren the value of farm life. Many people will remember attending his 4th of July parties, his favorite holiday. One of the greatest joys of his life was raising his children and seeing them stay close as they grew into adulthood.
Joe was active as a school board member for 12 years, serving as president 1 year, water board member for 16 years, serving as president for 1 year, and the Dragoon Township board for almost 30 years. He served on the finance council at church, as a Young Farmer and a 4-H leader. He worked at Garrett Ranch & Supply for 22 years. He was an active member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Scranton, KS.
He is survived by his children, JoAnn (Mack C.) Colt, David (Chad Ledger) Quaney, Duane (Amy) Quaney, and Jane (Shane) Downs, his grandchildren, Mack J. (Amber) Colt and Jane (River) Davis; Dillon (Jeniffer) Quaney, Anna (Matt) Murphy and Seth Quaney; and Eli Downs, step-grandchildren Kelli Downs, Meagan Downs and Jessica (Drew) Yochum, great-grandchildren Charlotte and Henry Murphy, and step-great-grandchildren, Milo and Rya Custodio-Downs, Asher Downs and Rowen Yochum.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Henrietta Quaney, children Alice Mary, Roger Eugene and Ruth Ann and siblings Thomas Paul, James Martin, John Raymond and Mary Agnes.
Services will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church Osage City at 10 am August 12th. Graveside service to follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Scranton. Visitation will be on August 11th at 6 pm St. Patrick’s Church Osage City with rosary to follow. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church Scranton Building Fund.
