Harold "Gene" Horst, 86, passed away early Sunday November 16, 2014 at the Coffey County Hospital in Burlington. He was born August 11, 1928 in Emporia, Kansas the son of John and Margaret Anderson Horst. Gene attended rural grade school near Madison and went on to attend Madison High School. Gene spent his entire life in the Madison area where he custom farmed throughout Greenwood County shortly after high school. Gene began working in the oil fields near Madison and worked his way up to Tool Pusher with Jackman & Jackman until leaving the oil patch in the early 1980's. Throughout his life he continued to farm and build his cattle herd. He was joined in marriage to Bettie E. Holland on November 14, 1953 in El Paso, Texas. They recently celebrated their 61st anniversary. Gene and Bettie have been life long members of the Madison United Methodist Church. Gene will be forever loved by his wife, Bettie of their home; his children, Mary (Alan) Meyers of Medicine Lodge, Kansas, Dan (Janie) Horst of Pittsburg, Missouri; Doris (Justin) Sage of Madison; Carol (Tom) Mains of Emporia; eleven grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Kenneth Horst. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Gene Horst Memorial Fund which will benefit the future Madison Medical Clinic.
