Charles Dean Scoggin, affectionately known as Charlie, passed away at his home in Emporia, Kansas on August 10, 2024. He was born in Emporia on February 1, 1957, to Eugene George and Dorothy Jean Cunningham Scoggin, who have now gone before him.
Charlie spent his childhood helping out on the family farm south of Hartford, where he developed a deep-rooted love for the land and the simple pleasures it offered. A familiar sight on the country roads, Charlie could often be spotted wearing his cherished hat and tucking a favorite agricultural magazine in his back pocket as he rode his bike on the nearby gravel roads.
Charlie remained on the family farm until July of 2021 when he moved in with his sister in Emporia. He had an exceptional memory, always quick to notice subtle changes in the landscape as he enjoyed countryside drives with his siblings, creating enduring memories along the way.
Charlie's educational journey took him through his early schooling at Hartford Elementary and later involved special education classes at Thomas Butcher Elementary in Emporia. He would later receive a certificate of attendance from Emporia High.
Through his life, Charlie developed an unshakable fondness for the simpler things, like savoring a Diet Pepsi and indulging in sweets for comfort. Having battled diabetes for many years, he was not allowed these simple pleasures until after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
At the time of his passing, Charlie was surrounded by those nearest and dearest to him, finding peace in their loving presence. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories that will forever be treasured by his surviving family members: sisters Linda Scoggin (Mike) of Emporia, Frankie Barker (George) of Lincoln, Nebraska; brothers Larry Scoggin (Donna) of Emporia, Donnie Scoggin of Neosho Rapids, George Scoggin of Hartford, Dennis Scoggin (Sandy) of Hartford, and Randy Scoggin of Hartford. Additionally, he holds a special place in the hearts of his numerous nieces, nephews, and a community of friends.
A graveside service to honor and celebrate Charlie's life will be held on August 17, 2024, at Hartford Cemetery in Hartford, Kansas. The service will commence at 10:30 AM at the patio building. Memorial contributions may be made to Hand In Hand Hospice and sent in care of the Jones VanArsdale Funeral Home & Crematory, P.O. Box #43, Lebo, Kansas 66856. Charlie's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him, as he journeys onward in his eternal peace.
