Barbara Ann Bohm, sister to Margene Crane, peacefully passed into her heavenly home during the night on Tuesday, January 2, 2024.
She had lived at the Life Care Center in Burlington for the past 8 years. She had a life-long passion for science and was a member of Mensa. Barbara achieved a Masters Degree in mathematics from the University of Kansas. She also attained a Masters Degree in Physics from the University of Florida.
Although it was a life-long dream of hers to work in the field of Physics, Barbara worked at the Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant in Alabama for a short time.
Barbara became ill with a mental and emotional disease in her 20’s. In the 50 plus years since the onset of her illness her diagnosis changed. The latest being 10 years ago which was schizoaffective with psychotic episodes, her most serious diagnosis to date.
Her sister, Margene praises the Lord that Barbara is free of her illness forever.
Barbara achieved much during her life of volunteer work as an advocate for others with mental illness and their families. She ran the support group “Spirit III” a free gathering of support for others with mental illness and their families in Emporia and the surrounding area. Barbara put her expertise to use sharing her knowledge with the Kansas State Legislature advocating for those experiencing mental illness and their families. Barbara’s family takes great pride in the selfless work for those that needed a spokesperson.
Barbara was born October 11, 1952 in DuBois, Nebraska the daughter of John and Elsie Fidermutz Bohm. She was preceded in death by her parents. She never married and did not have children. She will be kept in the heart and memories of her only sibling, Margene Crane.
Barbara was cremated and her ashes will be scattered by her family at a later date.
