John Henry Atchison

September 26, 1930 — February 18, 2019

John Henry Atchison, 88, passed away Monday, February 18, 2019 at his home in Osage City.He was born September 26, 1930 in Osage City, Kansas the son of John H. and Florence Gunterman Atchison.       John enlisted in the United States Army on May 8, 1952  and served during the Korean War. He would receive a Honorable  Discharge as a Sergeant in May of 1954.  He married Marguerite Schnoor in the summer of 1961 in Oklahoma. They divorced in the summer of 1981, just shy of 20 years of marriage. Following his military service, John began a career in construction. He would go on to manage the Hankamer Ready Mix Plant in Osage City for almost 20 years. He later operated a mower for the Township. John was a member of Robert Heizer American Legion Post #198 in Osage City for 49 years. He also held membership in the Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Emporia for 61 years. John later took a duel membership in the Osage City Chapter for many years as well. John will live on in the hearts of his daughter, Vanessa Burkdoll (Brett) of Beloit, Kansas; a son, John H. Atchison III (Sandra) of Raytown, Missouri; a sister, Betty Reece of Topeka; brothers, Robert Atchison of Topeka and Charles Atchison of Wakarusa; 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; a step-son, Richard Ashby (Kathy) of Grandview, Missouri and a  son-in-law, Dave Stubby of Wamego. He was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Sarah Stubby and a brother, Bill Atchison. John was also preceded in death by his companion of  fifteen years, Ramona Woods on November 1, 2006. Other survivors include Ramona’s children; Sheryl Bowers, Willa Winsky, Elizabeth Griffin, Christiann Rimbey and Charley Gunterman. 
 Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, February 23, 2019 at the First Presbyterian Church in Osage City. Burial will follow services in Osage City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. until 7:30 P.M., Friday evening at the VanArsdale Funeral Chapel in Osage City. Memorial contributions may be made to the Robert Heizer American Legion Post #198 and sent in care of the funeral chapel at 107 N. 6th Street, Osage City, Kansas 66523.
