Howard Orville Thompson

Howard Orville Thompson, 91, passed away Saturday, November 19, 2022 at the Osage Nursing Center in Osage City, Kansas.


He was born October 4, 1931 in Barclay, Kansas the son of Louis C. and Gladys M. Walker Thompson. He attended Osage City High School and graduated with the Class of 1949.



As a teenager he began driving a Lime Truck which he continued until entering the United States Army at the age of 21. He proudly served during the Korean War from November 6, 1952 until receiving his honorable discharge on August 20, 1954 as a Corporal.


Howard returned home and took up driving again spending a majority of his time hauling fuel. He would later take a position as the rural mail carrier for Burlingame. He continued to deliver mail until his retirement at age 67.


Howard was joined in marriage to Carol Aileen Patterson on May 3, 1952 in Melvern, Kansas. To this union, three sons were born, Scott, Troy and Clark.


Howard and Carol were members of the First United Methodist Church in Osage City. He not only served his country he contributed to his community by serving on the Osage City Council for several years during the 1970’s and 1980’s. Howard held memberships in the Robert Heizer American Legion Post #198 of Osage City where he helped with and occasionally called Bingo for many years. He also served as a member of the Osage City Lions Club for many years. Howard was an avid bowler in his earlier years enjoyed bowling with the local league.


He will live on in the hearts and memories of his three sons, Scott (Diana) Thompson, Troy (Kym) Thompson and Clark ( Lori) Thompson all of Osage City; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; numerous extended family and a community of friends. He was preceded in death by his dear wife, Carol on March 7th of this year.


The family invites you to join them at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at the VanArsdale Funeral Chapel in Osage City. Burial will follow services at Osage City Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Robert Heizer American Legion Post #198 and sent in care of the funeral chapel at 107 N. 6th Street, Osage City, Kansas 66523.
