Elma May Fry

September 26, 1922 — December 28, 2015

MADISON-Elma May Fry entered heaven on December 28, 2015. She was born to Arch and Mary Lenhart Johnson of rural Hamilton, Kansas, on September 26, 1922. She was the youngest of the family, having five older brothers. She met Bob Fry at Kansas State Teacher's College where she received her lifetime teaching certificate in a two-year program. While in college, she lived in a boarding house called the "Jones' Dorm," making many life long friends. The "Jones' Dorm" had annual reunions for more than 50 years. She began teaching eight grades in a one-room country school southwest of Hamilton. After marriage to Bob Fry in Kansas City, June 22, 1944, they lived in Kansas City and then Lawrence. They moved to Hamilton where Bob taught music and Elma taught in the elementary school. They moved to Pawnee Rock where Bob taught music and Elma was a homemaker after the birth of their son, Larry. In 1953, the Madison School Board hired Bob to teach music and Elma to teach fourth grade, and later reading and special education. Elma enjoyed greatly the music provided and organized by Bob. She and Bob "adopted" a number of young teachers and their spouses who moved into the Madison community inviting them to their home. She was a member of the Madison United Methodist Church and a member of the Civic Culture Club, and P.E.O. She is survived by her children: Larry Fry (and wife Penny) of Lawrence and Mary Beth Davies (and husband, Scott) of Newton, Kansas. Much-loved grandchildren survive: Joshua Fry (and wife, Leena Phadke Fry) and Megan Davies. She is also survived by a great-grandson Toland Devesh Fry, nieces, nephews, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and one nephew. Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, January 4, 2016 at the Madison United Methodist Church. Burial will follow services at Janesville Cemetery in Hamilton. The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M., Sunday evening at the VanArsdale Funeral Home.
