Charles Lee Armstrong

April 30, 1934 — January 21, 2015

Charles Lee "Charlie" Armstrong, 80, passed away, Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at his home in Madison. He was born on April 30, 1934 in Howard, Kansas the son of Russell and Geneva McIlvain Armstrong. Charlie graduated from Madison High school with the Class of 1952. He began working at the local Ford dealership in Madison before joining the United States Army in May of 1957. He proudly served until being honorably discharged from active duty in February of 1959. He fulfilled his reserves obligations on April 30, 1963. Following his military service, Charlie worked at a rock quarry near Hartford and was involved in the building of John Redmond Dam. He went on to work for Jim Hollis at the Madison Conoco Station. In May 1971 Charlie and Lee Dixon went into partnership and purchased the service station at 3rd and Sherman from Hollis Oil. They named their business A&D Oil Company after flipping a coin to determine which initial would be first. In 1976 Lee sold his half of the station to Charlie. Charlie continued to operate the station until selling it in May 2001 . He later went to work at ABZ Manufacturing in Madison for several years until retiring in March of 2014. Charlie was joined in marriage to Leola "Violet" Maltby on September 4, 1954 in Howard, Kansas. They enjoyed over fifty years of marriage until Violet's death on March 10, 2008. He will be forever loved by his two daughters, Michelle Cole of Kansas City, Missouri and DeAnn Wagner of Madison; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his companion Robin Steinbrink of Madison.
