CARMEN CHAVEZ Carmen Chavez, 80, of Osage City, passed away Thursday, September 11, 2014 at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka. She was born August 10, 1934 in Howard, Kansas, the daughter of Enrique and Josefina (Fabian) Gallardo. She graduated from Howard High School in 1952. She married Primo Gonzales Chavez on April 2, 1955 at Moline, Kansas. Carmen had worked for AT & T and for Hallmark Card for almost 20 years. She was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Osage City. She also belonged to the Altar Society and Osage City Senior Center. She was a dedicated volunteer for ECAT for 15 years. Survivors include two daughters, Josie Shaughnessy of Iola and Selina Chavez of Elgin, South Carolina; two sons, Thomas J. Chavez of Leavenworth, Kansas and Michael E.Chavez of Fallon, Nevada; five sisters and four brothers, Richard Gallardo and Henry Gallardo, both of Wichita, Mary (Paul) Leddy of Columbus, Indiana, Amelia Hall of Wichita, Gloria (Herschel) West of Wichita, Corrie Montgomery of Howard, Kansas, John (Patty) Gallardo of Howard, Kansas, Tony (Marge) Gallardo of Valparaiso, Indiana, Terri Kerr of Winfield, Kansas; a brother-in-law, Julius Aguilera of Wichita; 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Carmen was preceded in death by, her parents, her husband, Primo in 2008, a sister Beatrice Aguilera in 2013. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 18, 2014 at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Osage City. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Osage City. Family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. with rosary being recited at 7:00 at church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick's Catholic Church or ECAT and sent in care of VanArsdale Funeral Chapel, 107 N. Sixth, Osage City, Kansas 66523.
